Borough Historian Releases New Book That Offers Glimpse into Municipal History

State College, Pa. – Longtime Borough of State College public servant Thomas E. Daubert has released “Reflections of 25 Years of the Borough of State College Government: 1996-2023,” a chronicle of municipal government history since the 1996 Centennial.

The book, penned through Mr. Daubert’s perspective as a former member of the Borough of State College Council, highlights the people, policies, and decisions that have helped shape the Borough into its current form. He currently serves as Borough historian.

“This monograph is a follow-up to Arnold Addison’s book on the State College government from its inception in 1896 until the beginning of the Centennial,” Daubert said. “Retired Mayor Addison asked me if I would be willing to author an update to the topics of the book in the future. The current monograph covers slightly more than the 25 years, starting with the 1996 Centennial year.”

Mr. Daubert draws from his extensive experience as a 24-year member of Borough Council to take readers on a historical journey with commentary on Borough councilmembers, mayors and advisories, boards and commissions (ABCs) membership. It also includes conversations with past and present Borough leaders.

“Tom Daubert is State College’s official historian,” Borough of State College Council President Evan Myers said. “I can think of no one alive who knows our town better than Tom. This book is a masterwork of State College government’s evolution since the 1996 Centennial celebration. Tom shows why he should be considered Mr. State College.”

Mr. Daubert was first elected to Borough Council in 1992. Six of his 24 years on the body were served as Council President. In addition to his work in Borough government, Mr. Daubert also chaired the Centre Region Council of Governments.

A native of Tamaqua, Pennsylvania, Mr. Daubert began his academic career at Pennsylvania State University in 1955 and earned his bachelor’s degree, master’s degree and his doctorate in chemical engineering from the university. His teaching career at University Park spanned 38 years, and he holds the distinction of professor emeritus of chemical engineering.
