2026 Bird of the Year Poetry Contest 🐦
Sustainable State College is seeking original poems celebrating the American Robin, the 2026 State College Bird of the Year. Centre Region residents are invited to submit poetry inspired by the robin and its impact on the community.
To enter, email entries to sustainablestatecollege@statecollegepa.us by Wednesday, June 24. Entries will be considered in three prize categories: Adult Poetry (18+), Teen Poetry (12–17), and Children’s Poetry (6–11) and will be displayed in the lobby of the Municipal Building. Submissions will be evaluated based on creativity and how well they capture the essence of the American Robin and its importance to the community.
Submission guidelines:
- Any poetry style may be submitted, including haiku, limerick, and free verse
- 30-line limit
- Must be a Centre Region resident to submit
Please note, by submitting, participants grant permission to the Borough of State College to share their work, with credit, in online and physical publications.
Calder Way Improvement Project Phase 2 & 2A Community Update
This past week, the contractor for Phase 2 (Terra Works) continued the installation of sanitary sewer lines from Cresson Alley to South Atherton Street, and conduit from South Burrowes Street to Cresson Alley. Starting next Tuesday, May 26, the contractor will be replacing storm structures in Burrowes Street as well as water line replacement. This work will close South Burrowes Street from New Alley to College Avenue. Vehicular traffic from Miller Alley to South Burrowes Street and South Burrowes Street to Cresson Alley remains closed.
Phase 2A, the contractor (Glenn O. Hawbaker) had several storm structures delivered. Each piece is several thousand pounds which makes installing the pieces very complex. More storm structure pieces are set to be delivered next week. No additional restrictions are planned for next week.
Both TerraWorks and Glenn o. Hawbaker will not work on Monday, May 25, in observance of Memorial Day.

No Bulk or Brush Collection on Monday, May 25
There will be no bulk or brush collection on Monday, May 25. Refuse collection will proceed as scheduled for the remainder of the week.
Movies Under the Stars Bike-In Movie Night: The Lorax
Ready for a night under the stars watching the big screen? Join the State College Borough for the Movies Under the Stars Series all summer long!
In recognition of National Bike Month, Sustainable State College is inviting you to enjoy a movie under the stars at Sidney Friedman Park. Classic Cones will be on site. Bring a blanket or chair and enjoy The Lorax outdoors with your friends, family, and community members. Those who bike to the park can enter a prize drawing. Bike valet will be available.
This event is FREE and open to all ages. The movie will begin at dusk.

The Redevelopment Authority meetings on Wednesday, June 17, and Wednesday, July 22, have been canceled. The next Redevelopment Authority meeting will be held on Wednesday, August 19, at noon.
State College Borough Office Closure on Monday, May 25
The State College Municipal Building will be closed on Monday, May 25, in observance of Memorial Day. Normal business hours will resume on Tuesday, May 26.
UPDATE: Upcoming Travel Restrictions on Thomas Street Between Adams Avenue and East Mitchell Avenue
Work for this project will now take place on Friday, May 26, weather permitting.
On Thursday, May 21, Jeff Tate Paving Inc. will be occupying 721 Thomas Street between Adams Avenue and East Mitchell Avenue for work grading a parking lot to prepare for paving. Work will take place between 7:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. and will cause one travel lane, the parking lane, and the sidewalk to be closed.
