Calder Way Improvement Project Phase 2A

State College, Pa. – Phase 2A of the Calder Way Improvement Project is set to begin Monday, March 9. Construction will take place at the intersection of East Calder Way and Hetzel Street. Waterline replacement will also occur on Hetzel Street from Beaver Avenue to College Avenue.

This project involves critical utility improvements to sanitary sewer, stormwater piping, water, electric and telecommunication systems, and the removal of any previously abandoned lines.

During the early days of construction, businesses and residents will see paint marks on the ground marking the location of utilities. This will occur repeatedly and is required by law. The contractor will install site fencing, perform test holes and saw-cut pavement. Staging for tools, equipment, and materials, such as stone and trench boxes, will also occur. More updates will be available as construction progresses.

The contractor will work Monday through Friday throughout the duration of this phase. The Borough of State College notes that there will be no work dates for special events. Some events that are included in the no work dates are Penn State finals week and Penn State Spring graduation. The contractor for Phase 2A is Glenn O. Hawbaker, Inc. Phase 2 and 2A received a $2.75 million H2O PA Grant for sewer, storm, and water improvements.

The initial phases of this project are centered around critical infrastructure replacement and upgrades. The Calder Way Improvement Project is part of the 2013 Downtown Master Plan. Upcoming phases will focus on improving accessibility for pedestrians and bicyclists.

The community can receive weekly updates by visiting the Calder Way Improvement Project page. Questions about the project may be directed to Tristan Klinefelter, the Borough’s Calder Way Public Relations Representative, by emailing tklinefelter@statecollegepa.us or calling (814) 680-4468.
