Stormwater Management Projects
Best Management Practices (BMPs) or Stormwater Controls are methods that have been determined to be the most effective and practical means of preventing or reducing non-point source pollution to help achieve water quality goals. BMPs include both measures to prevent pollution and measures to mitigate pollution. They filter out pollutants and/or prevent pollution by controlling it at its source.
The Borough in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is taking efforts to improve the quality of stormwater run-off from properties in the Borough.
- Inflow & Infiltration- Inflow and infiltration are terms to describe how groundwater or storm water illegally enters a sanitary sewer system. Learn more about inflow and infiltration, why they're a problem, and what we're doing about it. Link to page
- On-Street Rain Gardens- Rain gardens are an effective solution for stormwater management. Rain gardens are low-lying green areas that contain rocks and water-tolerant plants that help slow and collect rain water that would've otherwise become runoff. Link to page
- Stormwater Inlet Stencils- The Borough of State College Public Works Department recently invited local Boy Scouts of America troops to help in raising awareness of stormwater pollution. This awareness campaign involved painting a stencil with the phrase: "Dump No Waste, Drains To Spring Creek" directly behind various stormwater inlets. Link to page

- Westerly Parkway Wetland Education Center- Located along Westerly Parkway in the Borough of State College is a 2.5-acre stormwater detention basin that intercepts much of the stormwater from the southwest part of the Borough and a portion of Ferguson Township. With financial assistance from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, trails, benches, educational signage and plantings were added to the site. Link to page
