2018 Authorities, Boards, Commissions and Committees (ABC) Appreciation Dinner

On Tuesday, April 17, 2018, the Borough of State College held the 2018 Authorities, Boards, Commissions and Committees (ABC) Appreciation Dinner at the Hyatt Place State College. Each Year the State College Borough Council hosts an Appreciation Dinner for its volunteer members of the Borough’s ABC. 


Arnold Addison Award

Since 2007, the Arnold Addison Award has been given in recognition to a person or group who has impacted the community through Town/Gown relations. Council Member Theresa Lafer presented the 2018 Arnold Addison Award to the South Hills School of Business & Technology. Paul Mazza III, President, Maralyn Mazza, Co-Founder, and Jeff Stachowski, Community Outreach Director, accepted the award on behalf of the school. The South Hill School of Business & Technology has been connecting students with organizations across the community since 1970. According to their website, “the Mission of South Hills School of Business & Technology is to offer qualified individuals the means to start and the encouragement to continue the lifelong growth process through higher education.”


The Legacy Award

The Legacy Award, first given in 1991, recognizes persons or organization that have led in the creation of a significant service facility or program which has improved the appearance, health or welfare of the Borough of State College. Two Legacy Awards were presented this year.

The first Legacy Award was presented by Council Member Cathy Dauler to the Foxdale Village Retirement Community, whose organization and residents have been making positive and meaningful contributions since 1990. Rob Hays, Chief Executive Officer, and Libby Mortensen, Director of Residency Planning/Marketing, accepted the Legacy Award on behalf of Foxdale Village. 

Council Member Jesse Barlow also presented the Legacy Award to former Mayor Elizabeth Goreham. Ms. Goreham has been working for over 20 years as an elected official for State College. She has served as Council member for 12 years, Council President for 2 years and Mayor for 8 years. Her service has made State College a more welcoming and sustainable community. 

Ingrid P. Holtzman

Harpers was awarded the Ingrid P. Holtzman Award for their recent renovations to their new downtown location. This has been a welcomed addition to the aesthetics of Downtown State College. The 2018 recognition was presented by Council Member Dan Murphy to Brian Cohen, owner. Since Harpers opened its doors in 1926, they have provided the State College and Penn State communities with traditional and fashionable clothes with extraordinary customer service. 


XYZ Award

The XYZ Award is given annually to a member of an ABC for their service which went above and beyond the call of duty. Council Member David Brown presented this year’s award to Ron Madrid. Ron Madrid’s son, Sean Madrid accepted on his behalf.

Ron Madrid has given many years of service by serving on the following committees:

  • 2003 to 2006–Historic Resources Commission
  • 2006–Alternate to Centre Regional Planning Commission
  • 2006 to 2012–Planning Commission
  • 2012–The Downtown Master Plan Steering Committee
  • 2015 to 2018–Real Estate Advisory Committee
  • 2017 to current–Zoning Rewrite Advisory Committee

 His work as a community volunteer has made a lasting impact on State College.

Other Notable Recognitions

Mayor Donald Hahn, Council Member Janet Engeman and Council President Evan Myers recognized the members of committees that were formed to work on special projects. Their diligent work and dedication to the various projects have made a lasting impact on the community.

Grace Hampton made a custom plaque with a piece of kente cloth that was utilized during the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Plaza Ribbon Cutting Ceremony.
