State College Welcomes New Mayor
State College, Pa – On Tuesday, December 17, Mayor Ronald L. Filippelli was sworn in as State College Borough Mayor. The ceremony was performed by President Judge Pam Ruest. Filippelli will serve the remaining two years of Mayor Donald M. Hahn's term. Council formally accepted Hahn's resignation on Monday, December 16, and appointed Filippelli as Mayor at that same meeting.
Filippelli served eight years as a member of Borough Council, including two years as President and one year as Chairperson of the Centre Region Council of Governments General Forum. His current activities include Board of Directors of the Centre County Airport Authority and chairperson of the Zoning Rewrite Commission. In addition, Mayor Hahn appointed Ron as the Council Liaison to the University. Filippelli was formerly a representative to the Schlow Centre Region Library Board of Directors, served as the Council’s representative on the Downtown Improvement District Board, was a member of the Urban Village Revitalization Plan Steering Committee, member and president of the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts and is a current member on the Board of the State College Community Land Trust.
Filippelli spent most of his professional career at Penn State, where he chaired the Department of Labor Studies and Industrial Relations, the Outreach Council and the International Council. He also served fifteen years as Associate Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, which Penn State awarded him with the Administrative Excellence Award in 1999 and the Outreach Award in 2004.
