State College Police are investigating a rash of phone scams in recent weeks. An unidentified caller will claim the victim’s computer is infected with a virus and needs to be repaired. The caller claims to be from a computer company such as Microsoft and instructs the victim to open a website to enter a credit card number for repair payment. On Tuesday, June 18, 2013, a scam call came from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
State College Police reminds the public to never give personal information such as social security or credit card numbers to callers over the phone. In addition, ensure your computer has up-to-date anti-virus and malware software installed.
