Governor's Award

The Information Technology Department at the State College Borough was formed in 2001 and has achieved its goal of becoming the centralized technology services department for the State College Borough. In 2003, a group of Municipal entities in the State College Area (Ferguson Township, Patton Township, College Township and the Centre Region Council of Governments) began discussing with the IT Director the possibility of the IT Department providing Technology Services for the regional entities. The group formed the Regional Technology Coalition (RTC) and began developing an IT Services contract.

The State College Borough IT Department now provides IT Services for Patton Township, the Centre Area Transportation Authority, the Centre Region Council of Governments, Ferguson Township and College Township; in addition to the Borough. This is the only known multi-jurisdictional program of its kind in the Commonwealth.

The Coalition's goals include reducing costs, improving applications and systems consistency and compatibility, enhancing security and maintenance and development of a long term technology plan, and after just a few years, the program has exceeded the expectations of all involved.

For these efforts in Intergovernmental Cooperation, the Centre Region Technology Coalition is recognized with the 2005 Governor's Award for Local Government Excellence.

The New PA Center conducts the Governor's Award for Local Government Excellence each year with the ceremony being held every April during Local Government Week. This prestigious award recognizes the creativity and accomplishments of local governments and officials that continuously work to improve their communities and meet the many challenges facing them. It recognizes those local governments and officials who have shown vision, determination, and dedication in the development and implementation of programs and projects designed to improve the quality of life in their community.
