LIHEAP DEADLINE EXTENTED, CASH GRANTS INCREASED

Pennsylvania's Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, better known as LIHEAP, will increase cash grant amounts by $100 and extend the application deadline.

Under the changes, LIHEAP's application closing date has been extended from March 15 to April 2. The Department of Public Welfare, which administers the program, expects this change will allow an additional 80,000 households to receive help paying their heating bills this winter.

The Department also expects cash grants to average $326. To learn more visit this site: http://www.dpw.state.pa.us/ServicesPrograms/LIHEAP/

2010 CENSUS

Census 2010

The U.S. Census is required by law to count every resident in the United States.  The 2010 Census will provide a basis for distributing more than $400 billion in federal funds to local communities to fund:  hospitals; job training centers; schools; senior centers;  bridges, tunnels and other-public works projects; and emergency services.

According to U.S. regulations, people are counted where they live and sleep most of the year.  If you live at school (on or off campus) that is where you will receive your 2010 Census questionnaire.  You should declare your school address as your residence when filling out the questionnaire.

The data collected by the Census also determines the number of seats our state has in the U.S. House of Representatives. People from many walks of life use Census data to advocate for causes, rescue disaster victims, prevent diseases, research markets, and locate pools of skilled workers and more.

GREENING STATE COLLEGE

food wasteIn a first of its kind program east of the Mississippi, State College Borough began curb-side pickup of food waste in the Greentree, Orchard Park and South Hills neighborhoods.

This pilot project will help evaluate the feasibility of community-wide curb-side food waste pickup and composting. The program may be expanded to other neighborhoods upon completion of the year-long trial.

The project was made possible through a Pennsylvania Act 198 grant awarded through the Department of Environmental Protection.  The Centre County Solid Waste Authority and the Pennsylvania State University also sponsor and support this initiative.

For additional information please email the Borough at .

SNOW REMOVAL REMINDERs

snow removalResidents are reminded that sidewalks must be cleared of snow and ice within 24 hours after the snow and ice ceases to fall.  If sidewalks are not clear, a violation will be issued to the property owner.

Residents are also reminded it is unlawful to deposit snow onto public rights-of-way.  If you use a snow removal company, please remind them it is unlawful to deposit snow onto streets or alleys.

green technology initiatives

Technology InitiativesThe Information Technology Department has joined as a partner of the Pennsylvania State Electronics Challenge. This is a voluntary program that encourages government entities to purchase green technology equipment, reduce the impacts of computers/equipment during use, and manage the disposal of obsolete equipment products in a safe and environmentally friendly manner.

As a participant in this program, the Information Technology department has:

·         Set all printers to default to duplex printing.

·         Made arrangements with Skills of Central PA to donate/recycle obsolete technology equipment. Skills disassembles each computer, printer, and monitor and utilizes or recycles each part individually.

·         Made arrangements to have all obsolete computer media (hard drives, tapes, disks, flash drives, etc.) destroyed in a secure and environmentally safe manner.

·         Installed motion sensor lighting in server rooms and other areas that experience low or infrequent employee traffic.

·         Implemented a process of specifying and purchasing EPEAT and Energy Star compliant technology equipment.
