Council Appoints New Mayor
Swearing In Ceremony
Mayor Felicia Lewis and
District Justice Carmine Prestia, Jr.

On October 5, Borough Council appointed Felicia Lewis the Mayor of the Borough of State College.  She was appointed Mayor after the sudden death of longtime Mayor Bill Welch, who served as Mayor from 1994 until his death on September 4, 2009.

Felicia Lewis has been active in serving State College since the 1970s. She has served on Borough Council, the Schlow Library Board of Trustees, and the Design Review Board. As a private citizen, she has been active in the Prison Society, AAUW, and the Aging In Place movement.  In 2004, she, along with her husband Peirce, was awarded the Legacy Award by Borough Council.

Sidney Friedman Park Dedication

Sidney Friedman Park

In a dedication ceremony on Thursday, September 17, State College Borough Council took pride in changing the name of our downtown Central Parklet to Sidney Friedman Park.

Mr. Friedman passed away earlier this year after a long and useful life. He was a developer and property owner who is universally credited with making downtown State College the friendly, vibrant, and attractive place it now is. He will always be remembered for development of Calder Way as a pedestrian-friendly retail street and for his key role in reopening the State Theater as the Borough's most important downtown entertainment and cultural venue.

Present at the ceremony were several members of Sid Friedman's family, including his widow Helen. Council President Elizabeth Goreham and Council Member Peter Morris gave brief remarks. Several other Council Members were present as were Borough Manager Tom Fountaine and several other members of Borough staff.  Pictured here is Helen Friedman with the new sign.

Community Resource Fair
Community Resource Fair

Also on September 17, the 4th annual Community Resource Fair was held in the Municipal Building.  The event was host to over 30 organizations who provided information on resources that are available to citizens in our community.  The steering committee for the Community Resource Fair is made up of members from seven local organizations: State College Borough, the Chamber of Business and Industry of Centre County, Penn State, Centre County United Way, Downtown State College Improvement District, Community Diversity Group and Global Connections.  Many thanks to our volunteers who helped make this event possible as well as the generous local vendors who donated food for refreshments.
