State College Borough E-Newsletter

April 2009

Earth Hour

Earth HourAs part of the initiative to promote global warming awareness, the Borough of State College is participating in Earth Hour and will be reducing energy consumption for one hour on Saturday, March 28, 2009, from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m.   Earth Hour began in 2007 in Syndey, Australia when 2.2 million homes and businesses switched off their lights for one hour.  In 2008 the message had grown into a global sustainability movement, with 50 million people switching off their lights.   The Borough joined with other municipalities and individuals around the globe in 2008 to encourage people to turn off their lights for one hour.

This year, the Borough is doing even more.  Many lights at municipal facilities will be turned off to promote this global event.  Please note that lights will remain on in some areas for safety reasons.

We encourage all citizens to participate in Earth Hour and help to reduce energy consumption by turning off all lights for one hour on Saturday, March 28, at 8:30 p.m.

Spring Carnival

LeafLeaf Spring Leaf CollectionLeafLeaf

Spring Leaf collection, yes it is that time of the year to wipe the dust off those leaf blowers, lawn rakes, and tidy up the lawn. Spring leaf collection will begin March 30th and continue through May 8th.  Public Works crews will collect leaves once each week throughout the Borough until collection ends.

Please have leaves ready for collection by 7:00am each Monday. Please rake leaves within 5 feet of the curb and do not place leaves in bags.  Please refrain from blowing or raking leaves into the street.  Please make sure that leaves are free of brush, glass, cans, rocks or other debris, as these items may cause damage to the collection equipment. Foreign objects and debris mixed in with leaves also add contaminates to our compost materials making it more difficult to produce a quality product.
