State College Borough E-Newsletter

March 2009

Welcome to the Borough’s first E-Newsletter.  As part of our on-going efforts to ‘go greener’ we hope to discontinue our bi-annual newsletter that is generally mailed to residents in March and September, which will save on a considerable amount of paper and other resources.

Heidrich: The Quiet H

Heidrich"Heidrich: The Quiet H", a photo exhibit of mid-century modern homes by former local architect Kenneth J. Heidrich, will be presented by the Centre County Historical Society from March 3 through March 30. The exhibit will be held in the lobby of the State College Municipal Building, 243 South Allen Street.

A more complete sample of his works will be available in a photo book at the Schlow Centre Region Library and the Historical Society, prepared by Robert E. Malcom, a member of the Historical Society's Contemporary Homes Committee.

For more information about the exhibit, please visit the Centre County Historical Society website or click here.

Paperboard Added to Centre County’s Recycling Program

Beginning January 2, 2009, the Centre County Solid Waste Authority added paperboard to its recycling program.  Paperboard items that may be recycled include but are not limited to:  cereal boxes, shoe boxes, gift boxes, clean food boxes (such as Nutri-Grain boxes, spaghetti boxes, cracker boxes, etc), paper towel rolls, toilet paper rolls and tablet backs.   It is very important to note that paperboard products should not be placed with corrugated cardboard.

tissue box.jpgCurbside residents are asked to recycle paperboard along with their mixed paper.  Please place the paperboard products and mixed paper in a plastic bag next to your curbside recycling bin.  Residents who bring their recyclables to county drop-off bins should place the paperboard in the compartment labeled “Mixed Paper/Junk Mail”.  Please do not place the paperboard in with the corrugated cardboard.

Commercial customers should place paperboard in the blue tote labeled “Mixed Paper.”  Do not place plastic bags in the blue totes.

For more information on recycling in Centre County, please visit the Solid Waste Authority’s website at www.centrecountyrecycles.com or call the Recycling Hotline at 238-6649.

Commercial Food Waste

foodwaste.jpgAs part of a Council’s initiative to promote climate protection in the community, Borough staff met with Centre County Solid Waste Authority staff to discuss plans to move forward with commercial food waste collection in the Borough.  An action and education plan is being developed for collection of food waste from several commercial accounts within the Borough. The goal is to begin collection on May 15, although this date is tentative as two pieces of equipment are waiting arrival for processing the food waste. This project is funded by a Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection Act 198 Grant awarded to the Borough in 2008.

Borough Receives Recovery Act Assistance

policebadge.jpgPresident Barack Obama recently announced that $2 billion in Recovery Act 2009 funding allocations for state and local law enforcement assistance is available through the Edward Byrne Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program, including over $72.3 million for the state of Pennsylvania. The JAG Program supports a variety of efforts such as hiring and support for law enforcement officers; multijurisdictional drug and gang task forces; crime prevention and domestic violence programs; and courts, corrections, treatment, and justice information sharing initiatives. The State College Borough Police Department will receive $23,512 from this program.

The procedure for allocating JAG grants is based on a formula of population and violent crime statistics, in combination with a minimum allocation to ensure that each state and territory receives an appropriate share of funding.  Sixty percent is awarded directly to the states and 40 percent is set aside for units of local governments.  Funding will be used by states and more than 5000 local communities to enhance their ability to protect communities and combat crime.

The Recovery Act includes more than $4 billion to assist state, local and tribal law enforcement and for other criminal and juvenile justice activities that help to prevent crime and improve the criminal justice system.
