Commuter Bike Light Campaign – to Light Up The Night!

State College, PA.  - CentreBike, the Centre Region's coalition of slow and fast bicyclists is taking to the streets on the evening of Monday, February 13th 2017 to encourage safe
commuter bicycling.

The organization of more than 100 paid members, will be installing free bicycle lights to bicyclists who are riding after dark without lights. Over 150 bicycle lights were purchased by CentreBike just for this event. The event will also provide an opportunity for CentreBike members to educate bicyclists about registering their bikes with the university police, and new bicycle classes and clinics being offered through Centre Region Parks and Recreation.

The event will also serve another purpose. Some of the volunteers will be conducting a bicycle count to determine bicyclist’s habits along a number of corridors. Data related to traffic volume and light usage will be collected, and provided to transportation planners at the Centre Regional Planning Agency as part of a non-motorized traffic count.

“The distribution of these lights serves not only as a direct action to improve bicyclist safety, but also to aid in cultivating a mindset based in safety, “ says President of CentreBike Tristan Avelis, “As the biking community grows, safety becomes a larger and larger topic of concern. Planting the seed of safety as early as possible will hopefully yield a result of a forever safe and conscientious oriented community, cyclist and non-cyclist.”

Police officers from both the university and the State College borough will be participating in the event that will take place at six different locations around campus and the downtown. “I feel very fortunate to live in a community where the police are proactive and eager to encourage safe bicycling habits,” says Vice President of CentreBike Andrew Artz.
