– At the August 17, 2020 meeting of the Borough Council, Councilman Dan Murphy announced his intention to resign effective immediately. Based on the effective date (August 17) of Mr. Murphy’s resignation, Council must vote to elect an Interim Council Member by no later than October 1, 2020, at 11:59 p.m. The applicant selected by Council will serve the remainder of Mr. Murphy’s term, which runs through 2021.
At a Special Meeting on August 28, 2020, Council approved the process for selecting an Interim Council Member, which includes a call for questions from the public for the applicants.

The process for selecting an Interim Council Member, includes the submission of a letter of interest describing the applicant’s qualifications and reasons for their interest in serving in this role. Only applicants who meet the qualifications to hold office, as established by the Borough’s Home Rule Charter, will be considered.
Section 401 of the State College Home Rule Charter requires that the person selected to fill this vacancy shall be a resident and registered voter of the Municipality.
Council is asking for all persons interested in being appointed to fill the vacancy shall submit a letter of interest providing an explanation of their interest and qualifications for serving.

9/9 – Deadline for the public to submit questions to applicants
9/10 – Special Meeting - Council could begin a discussion about those who have expressed interest in serving as the Interim Council Member and finalize questions for candidates to address
(POSSIBLY) 9/15, 16 & 17– Presentations (final dates will be decided based on the number of applications)
9/21 – Council vote on the Interim Council Member, if possible. If Council is not ready to vote at its 9/21 meeting, an additional meeting may need to be scheduled
All deliberations and discussions by Council regarding appointments to elective representatives must occur in a public meeting, as per the Sunshine Act, 65PA. C.S.A. Section 701.
