Update 09/10/2018

Weather Forces Schedule Changes on Atherton Street Job

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) wants to keep the public informed about the work that continues on North Atherton Street. Other than the long-term lane closures between West North Hills Place and Cherry Lane that are listed below, there will be no lane closures beginning Friday, September 14 through Sunday, September 15, due to a Pennsylvania State University home football game. Two lanes will be open for inbound traffic and two lanes open for outbound traffic throughout that period of time. The center lane will remain closed and no left turns will be allowed.

Please note the other following delays through Friday, September 14:

  • From West Aaron Drive to West North Hills Place – No work anticipated during this period.
  • From West North Hills Place to West Cherry Lane – Due to the development of a sinkhole, the Northland Center entrance will be closed until repairs can be made sometime this week. This entrance is about 300-feet prior to Blue Course Drive on the right side of Atherton Street heading toward the University. A long-term traffic pattern remains in place closing the far, right lane heading toward the University. When the contractor is not working, two lanes will remain open for inbound and outbound traffic. However, when the contractor is working, traffic will be reduced to a single lane for inbound traffic. Due to the turning lane being used for inbound traffic, left turns will always be restricted through the length of this work zone.
  • From West Cherry Lane to West Hillcrest Avenue – The contractor will be installing a new water line in this section. When the contractor is working, there will one lane closed in each direction. Please note that West Cherry Lane will be closed from Wednesday, September 12 through Thursday, September 13. A detour around this closure will be established using North Atherton Street, Blue Course Drive and Martin Street.

All work is weather and schedule dependent. Travel delays can occur because of the lane closures—especially during high traffic volume. Drivers should allow for extra travel time and use caution when traveling through work zones. Flaggers may be present in the roadway directing traffic and traffic may be stopped for short periods of time. Drivers are encouraged to be patient and courteous to other drivers.

PennDOT has numerous projects taking place in the State College area and is aware of the frustration road work can create. This work is part of the North Atherton Street project that is taking place through 2019 with phased work zones stretching from Aaron Drive to Park Avenue. Work will include the relocation of numerous utility lines, relocation of sewer and water lines, drainage improvements, curbing, sidewalks, ADA ramps, traffic signal upgrades, new concrete median and paving.
