Update 11/13/18

Atherton Street Update Through mid-November

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) wants to keep the public informed about the work that continues on North Atherton Street. Traffic pattern changes could bring long delays early next week.

Alert

On Wednesday, November 14, the contractor will be closing Cherry Lane on the right side of North Atherton Street. This closure will impact those traveling toward the University during daylight hours as the contractor installs drainage pipe.

November 12 through 16, motorists can expect the following:

  • From West Aaron Drive to Park Avenue—The work zone speed limit has been reduced from 35 MPH to 25 MPHfrom Aaron Drive to the State College Borough line near MitchellAvenue. This speed reduction will be in place until project completionin October of 2019. The speed limit from Mitchell Avenue to ParkAvenue within State College Borough is already permanently posted at 25 MPH.
  • From West Aaron Drive to Denton AvenueThe contractor plans to work on installing a concrete median island between West Aaron Drive and Denton Avenue in the center of Atherton Street on Monday, November 12 through Wednesday, November 14. Traffic control will consist of daylight lane closures maintaining traffic to at least one lane in each direction while the contractor is working.
  • From Denton Avenue to Blue Course Drive— No work anticipated
  • From Blue Course Drive to Woodland DriveThrough December 20, a long-term lane closure will remain in place closing the far, right lane heading toward the University. While the contractor is not working, two lanes will remain open for inbound traffic and two lanes will remain open for outbound traffic. However, while the contractor is working, traffic will be reduced to a single lane for inbound traffic. Work will mainly consist of upgrading the existing drainage system, installing new curbing and sidewalk, and placing topsoil.
  • From Woodland Drive to Park AvenueThe contractor will continue installation of a retaining wall in front of the Exxon gas station. Traffic will only be reduced to a single lane for outbound traffic from the University when concrete is being poured. No water line work is anticipated this week. Verizon has been on-site performing wire installation and splicing between Hillcrest Avenue and Park Avenue. The work consists of reducing traffic to a single lane for outbound traffic from the University.

All work is weather and schedule dependent. Travel delays can occur because of the lane closures—especially during high traffic volume. Drivers should allow for extra travel time and use caution when traveling through work zones. Flaggers may be present in the roadway directing traffic and traffic may be stopped for short periods of time. Drivers are encouraged to be patient and courteous to other drivers.

PennDOT has numerous projects taking place in the State College area and is aware of the frustration road work can create. This work is part of the North Atherton Street project that is taking place through 2019 with phased work zones stretching from Aaron Drive to Park Avenue. Work will include the relocation of numerous utility lines, relocation of sewer and water lines, drainage improvements, curbing, sidewalks, ADA ramps, traffic signal upgrades, new concrete median and paving.

November 5 through 9, motorists can expect the following:

  • From Woodland Drive to Park Avenue – The contractor will be installing new water line in this area. The State College Borough noticed the previous dates of road closures would effect two polling places for election day Tuesday and immediately contacted the necessary people to get this changed. The Borough wants to assure voters there will not be any issues getting to the Church of Christ (405 Hillcrest Avenue) or the Comfort Suites (132 Village Drive) during Election Day.
  • Reduced Speed Limit Alert – On Monday, November 5, the work zone speed limit will be reduced from 35 MPH to 25 MPH from Aaron Drive to the State College Borough line near Mitchell Avenue. The reduction in speed was determined after a speed study was conducted. This reduction is expected to increase safety for motorists, pedestrians, and workers throughout the construction zone. The speed limit from Mitchell Avenue to Park Avenue within State College Borough is already permanently posted at 25 MPH.
