Centre County Library (Bellefonte)

The Centre County Library is the first public library in Centre County.
Historical Bellefonte resident Ann Elmira Humes, requested in her will that her home (the historic Miles-Humes home, built 1814-1815) be used as a library, as long as the community provided financial support within a reasonable period of time. In 1938 the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and Centre County agreed to help to provide funding. On October 25, 1939, the Library had its grand opening at the northwest corner of Allegheny and Howard Streets, with a collection of 10,000 volumes. In 1956 the name was changed to Centre County Library & Historical Museum.
